EXTRA!!
FEDERAL TRADE
vs
BAR BELLS!!
There has been considerable in the newspapers lately such as is commented upon in the article in this issue. There Should Be A Law Against It. The task to educate, to reason with these men falls upon us who publish this magazine devoted to what is best in exercise and health building. We have progressed far on the road to converting many of these men who don't know and it is part of our work to teach or persuade the rest that weight training and weight lifting builds a quality of all around physical ability which can not be attained in any other way.
Calisthenics as practiced in most schools and gymnasiums are a waste of time. The waving of arms in a listless manner is the accepted practice. To build muscles, strength, super health, a perfect body and all around physical perfection it is necessary to develop all of the muscles. To gradually build their ability to overcome ever greater resistance. And weight training has proven to be the best way to attain this most desirable state.
Weights always offer the same resistance. They never weaken or wear out. They can instantly be increased from a light poundage which would suit a child's or a frail woman's strength, to sufficient resistance for the world's strongest men. With weights any man can obtain what he desires in a physical way. Moderate training to keep fit, heavier training to build great strength, super health and a magnificently developed body. Weight training builds speed, endurance, improves all around athletic ability, improves all the bodily processes, strengthens the organs.
Thousands and thousands of men have received benefit from weight training. These men who have trained with weights know better than anyone else of the great benefits they received. Thousands of men like myself and the many York champion lifters, wished to be strong and well built. We tried the light, no apparatus methods with very little success. Finally we learned of bar bell and dumbell training and became what we wished to be in a physical way.
Bar bell and dumbell training has been very valuable to me. Finally the time came in my life when my affairs were in such order that I could do what I wanted to do. And what I desired to do above everything else was to teach others to be strong and healthy, successful and happy as I have been.
With that purpose in mind I started this magazine nearly four years ago. I lost very heavily at first but I didn't go into the business to make money. If money was desired, the same amount of effort back of any other business would mean real profits to a man. But we got along. "Our magazine" sales grew until we were putting out 70,000 each month. Until we enrolled over a thousand pupils for the York courses in the last month. Perhaps in making this progress, we stepped on someone's toes a bit. But we teach and write what we believe and what has been proven to be right. Thousands were made strong and healthy by the simple methods we teach. Right eating, exercise, moderation in all things, any way.
We received a visit one day from an unhealthy appearing man who stated that he was from the Federal Trade Commission in Washington. He said that there had been a complaint about our editorial policy. I asked him if he meant my editorials or my articles. He said both. I asked what was the complaint. He said that people naturally thought that I was an unbiased expert and when I wrote about York bar bells I was taking unfair advantage of them. I closed the door and said: "Why that's ridiculous." My photo is plastered all over the magazine as physical director of the York Bar Bell Company. So often I write that any exercise is better than no exercise, but bar bell training is the best form of training. Anyone who reads the magazine can see that I am a weight lifter, first, last and always a bar bell man. The people who read our magazine whish to know about barbells. how to use them and how to win their way to super health through them.
Anyone can complain about anything to the Federal Trade Commission and they will investigate and try to make a case out of it. Their building is about two blocks long and two blocks wide and several stories high. Lots of unemployed men have obtained work there during this administration and they have to do something. What they have set out to do this time is to prove among other things that a system of training without apparatus will bring the same results that bar bell and weight lifting training will bring.
One would think that a government bureau would have more important things to do. There are many ways that the country can be improved, there is much constructive work that can be done. We pay taxes to help run the country. And in return a nonsensical case like this is brought. one time the Federal Trade set out to stop the bleaching and chemical processes used to whiten flour. For many reasons, probably most of which was pressure of important business concerns, they in time failed to enforce their case. Now it is up to us to show them that they are wrong. This case is not Federal Trade against Strength & Health. It is Federal Trade against bar bells and weight lifting.
We are going down to Washington when this case comes up with such an outstanding group of physical specimens who attained their physical perfection through bar bells, as will astonish Federal Trade or any other body. We would be pleased to hear from leading bar bell instructors and those who have obtained strength and health by bar bell training, who would like to be present when this hearing comes along. We would also like to hear from as many lifters and bar bell men as possible who have obtained exceptional results from bar bell training and leading the Strength & Health Life. Specially those who tried non apparatus methods without success until they trained with bar bells and obtained their physical desires.
If interested in doing your bit for barbellism, kindly communicate with me at your early convenience.

...To sum up: - All who read this and have benefited by
barbell training, after first using "non-apparatus methods,"
are requested to immediately communicate with me.
