Here's Why I Went "WEIDER"

by George Eiferman, "Mr. America"

Yes, it's true that I have endorsed other courses, yet despite this I always followed Weider Methods. If this seems to be a contradiction, and if in your eyes I appear insincere and unreliable, let me tell you my story so you can understand what has taken place since I started my bodybuilding career.

ALL OF YOU have seen my physique and exercise shots used to illustrate the barbell advertisements of another bodybuilding and weightlifting magazine. You've read my words endorsing their courses and training principles and seen me acclaimed as their exclusive product.

Beyond doubt, you'll wonder what reason I can have or what explanation I can give for now advocating another system of weight training - the Weider System. It is, therefore, my most sincere hope that I can thoroughly and clearly explain my "change of heart" in this article.

If a man can be true to himself and honest with himself, then it naturally follows that he cannot help but be true where the rest of his associations are concerned. Truth and Honesty are the codes I have always tried to live by and that is why I am willing to admit that I have been wrong in the past, and then explain why I have left the organization whose courses I previously endorsed.

This change wasn't made without a great deal of thought on my part, but now I know that the change was justified, and if it is possible for me to present the truth to but one young bodybuilder, one young and untried beginner taking his first steps along the path that leads to Physique fame and glory, then my object in writing this article has been achieved.

Since it is impossible for me to deny that I endorsed and followed other systems of training, it is up to me to explain why I did so in the first place.

I began my bodybuilding career before the Weider Courses became popular and world famous. I was interested only in building bigger muscles and great strength as fast as I possibly could. So because I knew that any system of training was better than none, I simply followed whatever courses were available at the time.

For a while, I made good progress, but it didn't take me long - not more than a few months - to reach a sticking point. No matter what I did, I just couldn't make any further advances, and it was then that I decided to experiment and find out for myself what exercises and training principles suited me best.

Because of this experimenting, this system of trial and error, I soon found out that the courses I had first followed were old fashioned and behind the times for the very simple reason - if for no others - that they still remained unchanged since the day they had first been written way back in the 1930's.

I discovered that a looser exercising style (Cheating Methods, Editor), exercising one section of the body completely before going on to another muscle group (Muscle Flushing, Editor), working a muscle and its opposing group alternately, set for set (Super Sets, Editor), and exercising first, those body parts that were under par in all my workouts (Muscle Priority System, Editor), did more for me, brought me faster gains in power, muscularity and proportions than any other system of barbell exercise I had previously employed.

These new training principles were discovered through my own experiments and experiences. It is true that I did not use them systematically in order to get the best possible results. I merely used them here and there - haphazardly - as I came across them during my workouts, yet I began to make good gains and kept up regular progress - no stale periods or sticking points.

I kept to these training principles and work-out methods up to a few years ago, and it was then that I was shown a copy of the Weider System and began to study it to see what I could learn. I never lost any chance to improve my bodybuilding knowledge, and the Weider System looked as if it could give me plenty of new information.

As I read through the Weider System I found all the methods I had come across during my bodybuilding experiments, clearly and accurately explained, systematically and scientifically arranged. Flushing Routines, Cheating Exercises, Set and Super Set Systems, Peak Contraction Programs, all those principles I had been using, that I had stumbled upon in my personal experiments, were thoroughly covered and illustrated step by step.

Then I knew that I had long been a follower of Weider Methods - methods that all the champions used - methods that had made each and every one of them the great bodybuilding stars that they were.

Yet I felt disturbed and ashamed. I had endorsed another Training System and lost faith in it. I had seen with my own eyes, my workout methods, and those of other champions, outlined in the Weider Courses. How could I break with the past without appearing dishonorable in the eyes of all bodybuilders? I decided I could take the first steps by advocating Weider Methods to all those I met, explaining Weider Principles and why they were so far in advance of all others, then, later on in this magazine when the opportunity was given to me, to tell readers the truth about my training.

I have used Weider Principles in my bulk training, gained 20 pounds bodyweight and brought my standing press up from 260 to 300 pounds. Now I am trimming down to hit 195 pounds, my best bodyweight for proportionate muscularity, using peak contraction and super set routines.

No matter what physical quality I want - bulk - strength - definition - symmetry - I only have to turn to the Weider Courses and find a sure fire method of obtaining it. I don't have to worry about over training. I don't have to spend any time compiling a program. I just turn to my copy of the Weider System and get what course I want without any delay.

It is my one regret that I didn't have the Weider System in my younger bodybuilding days. My gains would have been faster, better, and I wouldn't have wasted time working with old fashioned methods. But all that's in the past now - forgotten so far as I am concerned. I look only to the future - to a constantly improving development, not only for myself, but for all those who do as I did - GO WEIDER.
