SCOTT and POOLE WIN TITLES
By Carl Richford
THIS was a really sensational show, the best seen by many in years. The show was put together and run really professionally. Full credit should go to Bud Parker for the many months of work put into it.
The 1964 I.F.B.B. Mr. America and Mr. Universe contest was held on Saturday, September 19th at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City.
The show itself was simple and pleasing. Ed Jubinville did a comedy posing routine that was well received; he had a muscle control contest with a belly dancer that was a real hit! All was done in good taste and well received, a welcome change from the usual stuff. Dom Juliano did his handbalancing act, which is one of the best. He'll shortly be going to Europe with it. A calypso group entertained and a strongman with some unusual stunts, mainly teeth lifting, was different and good.

As for the Mr. America show, results tell the story. Poole won on overall symmetry, his upper body much improved over the past, legs not quite as good, but still the best around. Freddy Ortiz was simply sensational, and the best poser in the whole show. He can control a crowd with master precision, and has a sensational routine that must be seen. Hugo Labra looked improved, but not enough to threaten. West Coast boys all did well, though a minor surprise was Yorton winning over Howorth, though his physique was the best ever.
The Mr. Universe show was good, with many foreign entries, especially from Canada and the West Indies. Rock Stonewall, recent winner of the Mr. North America won the small class, looked much improved, and credits Irvin Johnson's products for it.
In the medium class Jorge Brisco from Argentina was sensational, has a most unusual ballet-like posing routine that had helped him win the Mr. World contest the week before. Of course he couldn't touch Scott.
In the tall class, Christopher Forde from Trinidad had the most unusual build, yard-wide shoulders and huge thighs. He took the title from veteran Sam Martin, Al Keene, John Decola's training partner, and Larry Powers, who didn't place. From last season at 210 he cut down to 180 and looked a bit too drawn and thin.
Scott has the show all to himself -- you cannot describe how sensationally well he looked. Losing to Poole must have really bruised his ego last year, for a solid year of training put him up to 210 bodyweight at a height of 5 feet 8 inches. His arms around 20, and all around he has great size, shape and rockhard cuts. In his present condition he would be a match for the best in the world today.
The Miss Americana was disappointing as usual, with very few girls and none except the winner really exceptional. Beverly Hebert was a former Miss Universe contestant and had real poise and presence.
Trophies were really sensational - $5,000 worth, winners' trophies seven feet tall. A pleasing aspect of this show was fewer contestants than in the past, but all good. All comments were full of praise.
A crowd of 2500, full capacity, paid up to $10 a seat to see the show, and roared their approval to all who were deserving.
EDITOR'S NOTE - We have previously referred to the IFBB as an outlaw organization. This terminology has apparently offended some of our friends who are either connected with the organization or who have entered some of the contests sponsored by this organization. To these good people, our apologies. No offense was intended. The word should have had an 'ed' on the end of it. We will use it no more. With an 'ed' on the end of it, it seemed to us to describe the attitude of the A.A.U. and FIHC toward the IFBB. The A.A.U. and the FIHC are the recognized Amateur Organizations supervising weightlifting and physique contests and they do not recognize the IFBB as an official organ of amateur athletics and have stated that anyone competing in an IFBB contest will run the risk of losing their amateur standing and will no longer be eligible to compete in amateur contests.
The same thing holds true of the NABBA organization of London who hold the Mr. Universe contests, and whose conduct of these contests is highly respected the world over. They have probably held physique contests longer than any other organization. Any one competing in one of their contests is subject to loss of his amateur standing also.
Regardless of the above mentioned penalties many of the top physique men do enter both contests each year and apparently have no interest in retaining their amateur status. Our readers want to know what is going on at such events and who won, and care very little about the background politics of the organizations themselves. We therefore bring reports of both contests and any other major contests throughout the world.
